What You Shouldn’t Store in a Self-Storage Unit

If you are planning to move, reorganize your dwelling, or downsize, or only looking for extra storage space to stow away your stuff for short-term or long-term, you would have found the idea of rented storage very appealing. There is no doubt that rented storage units are a great way to manage your stuff and ensure it’s safeguarding without hassles or stress, many people make glorious mistakes while using their rented storage space. Here is a handy list of items that should never go in your rented storage unit.

Abby's Self Storage no pets allowed

Living (or Dead) Organisms

This might sound strange, but many people have been found living in and operating their life from rented storage units. They seem to have mistaken these units for rented homes, which are obviously not the same. Rented storage units are only meant for storing your ‘non-living’ stuff. This means that neither you nor your pets or plants can be in there. Even professional gardeners are not allowed to store their plants in storage units.

Abby's Self Storage no foods allowed

Perishable Items

No matter what the label of a food or other biological material says, it is bound to perish and decay sometime. Stored food items that go bad are very messy to clean up and are potentially hazardous to human health. The same holds true for boxes and containers that have traces of food or other perishable items.

Firearms and Explosives

Items such as firearms, gunpowder, explosives, and munitions are never allowed inside any storage facility. This is because they carry the risk of potentially harming tenants and damaging the facility.

Hazardous Material

Corrosive, toxic, odorous, and chemical materials are not allowed inside storage units. The same holds true for insecticides, pesticides, fertilizers, bleach, aerosol cans, lead paints, petroleum products, and radioactive compounds and asbestos.

Scented Items and Wet Items

Most storage facilities don’t allow storage of scented or wet items because they have the potential to attract insects or lead to the growth of mold and fungus that may damage other stored goods.

Cash and Expensive Items

Storage facilities require you to disclose the value of the items that you are going to store in their units. Any item that costs more than $5,000 is identified as expensive and is off limits for storage. Also, stolen goods are not allowed.

Abby's Self Storage no drugs allowed

Illegal Items

It is not a good idea to store banned substances in a storage unit. The same holds true for stolen goods. Don’t be misled by movies and don’t think about storing these items in a rented storage unit, for your own well-being.

Construction Materials

Since spare and unwanted construction material can be recycled and disposed of properly, it is also not allowed inside a rented storage unit. If you have trouble in getting some materials recycled, contact the concerned authority instead of stacking it up in a rented storage facility.

Abby's Self Storage no vehicle allowed

Uninsured, Unlicensed and Non-Working Vehicles

If you are thinking about storing your vehicle in a rented storage unit, you have to ensure that it is registered and has a valid license. At the same time, the vehicle should be insured and in working condition.

Now you know about what items are not supposed to be stored in a rented storage facility. However, it is always best to clarify all relevant concerns with the facility and understand their policies for the specifications of the stored items.

3 Tips to Prepare for a Long Term Storage

Rented storage facilities are a blessing if you are looking for options where you can safely stow away your stuff for long-term. Long-term storage of your items may be needed if you are planning to move out of your city or country temporarily for business or military deployment, studies, or if you have an extensive remodeling and revamping plan for your existing dwelling. Whatever the reason be, long-term storage of items requires special considerations to ensure their safety. Here are the three most important tips that will help you in preparing for long-term storage.

Plan The Storage

This might sound absurd, but you need to plan the entire long-term storage drill in your head before actually starting to pack your stuff. This includes some serious research about the suitable storage facilities, thinking about the pros and cons of different packing materials, chalking out the information that you will put on the labels, etc. The most laborious and time-consuming aspect of this drill is to make a list of items that you will store. Only when you have thought the entire process through in your head, you should proceed to the next tip.

Abby's Self Storage pack for long term storage

Start (and finish) Packing

Once you know which item will be going to the rented facility for long-term storage, you should start packing each. There are several points to remember in this process:

  • You should thoroughly clean each item before packing. Even a little bit of dust and dirt should not be left. Use the vacuum cleaner if needed.
  • Apply protective sprays to wooden furniture and leather goods.
  • Use a bleach solution to disinfect the internal surfaces of equipment like the refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher.
  • Ensure that all items are completely dry and odorless before you pack them for storage.
  • Disassemble all bulky items that can be disassembled. This will not only make packing easy but also give you more space when you stack it in the storage unit.
  • Never close the doors and lids of these items completely to prevent moisture build-up during storage.
  • Use only new boxes for stacking the stuff because new boxes are sturdier.
  • Avoid wrapping the items in plastic bags because they can retain moisture in the long run.
  • Pack fragile and delicate items with special care. Use ample bubble wrap and fillers. Use corrugated sheets to separate them and stack all fragile items in one place.
  • Prepare elaborate and tidy labels and paste many of them on each box to ensure visibility on all sides of the box.

Remember to keep this list safe because it will be helpful when you take the items out of the storage facility.

Choose the Right Storage Facility

The final tip on preparing long-term storage is to choose the right storage facility. There are different kinds of storage units available in the market and each has its own feature. For example, a climate-controlled unit will regulate temperature as well as humidity and may be preferable over a standard unit that doesn’t have these regulatory features. Ask the facility owner about their policies regarding long-term storage and inquire about the insurance details. You should ensure that the storage facility has a sound security system to safeguard your belongings in your absence. The overall maintenance of the facility should also be considered.

If you keep these three tips in mind while preparing for long-term storage, you will come back to find your belongings in great condition. Also, you will be able to retrieve every item without wasting time and making any additional effort.

5 Storage Unit Tips You Didn’t Know About

When you hear storage units, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Well, when we talk about storage units, it’s often viewed as a moving solution or as a seasonal storage solution. But nobody seems to be talking about how amazing storage units can be during a home renovation. Whether you plan on expanding your living room or adding an additional bedroom, you’ll probably need to make room for the remodeling. Often times “making room” means you got to move your furniture and items away from the renovation site. Otherwise, your furniture will get its own makeover and we wouldn’t want to happen.

Abby's Self Storage storage tips

When it comes to home renovations, the most common issue people run into is the lack of space to properly store their belongings. This is where storage units come in handy.

When renting a storage unit, most people have the big aspects covered – comparing prices and locations, noting the hours the unit is accessible, etc. Here are 5 storage unit tips you didn’t know:

Take Advantage of the Amenities

Rental storage units are a business. Like any business, the owner offers perks and amenities to keep their clients satisfied. Offering free amenities might seem counterintuitive for a company trying to make money, but getting more clients based on word-of-mouth reviews is an equal hand-off.

When considering a storage unit, be sure to ask about their amenities. Some places offer anything from a free moving truck to furniture covers.

Understand Your Belongings Before Storage

Most people have the general idea of tightly packing as many of their belongings into a single storage unit. We get it; you want to maximize your storage space. However, it’s important to understand your belongings before you store anything in them. Some items may require a climate controlled unit to help maintain your furniture in tip-top condition. Depending on how big your home renovation project is, it could take anywhere between 4 to 8 months before completion. This piece of information is often times overlooked and may possibly help with deciding between a regular storage unit and a climate controlled unit.

Thermostat

Benefits of Climate Controlled Units

Many storage unit facilities offer climate-controlled units for a slightly higher price. You might balk at spending more money than you absolutely have to, but it is something for you to consider if the items you plan to store are fragile or valuable. For example, photo albums can easily warp in units that aren’t climate-controlled.

Storage Unit Security

Arguably the most important factor when it comes to storage units and with good reason. Often times, a clean facility is a good indicator that the facility has security cameras. Think about it, would you litter if you knew someone might be watching you? Live security cameras are an industry standard nowadays when it comes to a storage facility. What often sets a secured storage facility apart from one another is having individual storage unit alarms. This little attention to detail security add-on is a great indication that the facility really cares about you and your belongings.

Reserve the Unit ASAP

If you’re planning on having a home renovation within the next couple of months or years, we highly recommend factoring in your storage unit rentals in your planning. Reserve your unit couple of days or months in advance by communicating with the managers. Keep in mind, storage units fill up fast especially if it’s from a reputable facility with great attention to detail and care for their tenants.

6 Must-Have Storage Unit Tips & Tricks

If you have ever tried organizing small spaces in offices or homes, you will understand how daunting a task it can be. This is because there is a need to place the right items in the right position to maximize space.

The same principles also apply to storage facilities. Rely on the manager for help determining what size unit you will need. Once your unit is rented, you should carefully determine how best to arrange your items in your unit.

The tips & tricks are centered on overall room utilization. Proper space utilization guarantees that your items are well stacked, secure and easy to access.

So, what are those must-have tips and tricks for storage unit space utilization?

1. Consider Your Heavy Items

Abby's Self Storage bed

While considering heavy items, keep in mind that you are working on saving space and also protecting your items. Heavy items work well as bases, as they are typically more stable, but always check on their fragility to avoid breakages.

Spread out the heavy items around the floor of the room and then start building up from there. Continue to stack boxes according to weight and how fragile the contents are.

Heavy, odd-shaped items like couches may be able to stand on one end depending on how they are constructed. Use items like couches as bases for lighter boxes.
2. Dismantle your Furniture

Abby's Self Storage sofa

Have you ever thought about how easy it would be to carry that piece of furniture in smaller pieces? If you haven’t then you should give it a thought.

Dismantled items are easy to transport, store and even stack. The whole process revolves around making the storage space more flexible. Think about removing legs from dining tables or breaking down modular furniture that you plan on storing for a while.

3. Fully fill your Boxes

Abby's Self Storage box

If you are thinking of protecting those fragile items, then you also have to think about fully filling your boxes. Filled boxes reduce the chances of unsafe shifting of items. Ever had a box’s contents shift on you and cause you to lose your grip? The fuller the box, the less likely that shifting will occur.

Apart from the constant knocks and break, there is also the scratching of those precious items of yours. You want to keep your items in good condition, and to do so, you should consider wrapping the items individually. If one item breaks it is less likely to damage another.

Work on placing similar items in the same boxes for easy accessibility. If the boxes are not completely filled, then you can use old blankets, bubble wrap or toys to cover the empty spaces.

4. Choose the Size of your Boxes Wisely

Take a look at warehouses around you. What is that common stacking procedure that you see? If you have not already noticed it is the same size boxes for the same level of stacking. It’s proven that same size boxes fit into smaller space and are easy to stack.

Typically boxes are stacked largest to smallest. Buy as many like-sized boxes as possible to maximize storage efficiency. When using multiple sizes, just be sure to use the largest ones as the base and the smallest ones at the top.

5. Protect your Items

Abby's Self Storage lock

Consider keeping your items in good condition even when in storage. Sheets work great for covering large furniture items to keep them from getting dust and dirt. Couches and mattresses especially should have protective covers as they are harder to clean than wood surfaces. Treat your wood items with a nice protector before storing and protect your items by using quality locks for the storage unit.

6. Consider Accessibility

Save on time spent looking through boxes for specific items by planning before moving items. Planning will help you sort out items that you might need sooner. Don’t stack too high and be sure to label the outside of each box with the contents so you can easily find what you need when you need it.

If you have room, try to create a center row that can be used as an access point for all items in the unit.  Remember to always place important things at the front!

4 Benefits of Self Storage

You may be considering self-storage, but are also wondering if it’s actually worth it.  There are a number of benefits to renting a storage unit, many you may not have even thought of.  Here are just a few reasons self-storage may be a worthwhile investment.

Cleaning up clutter and Holding onto valuable items

Do you ever wish you had more space around your home, but don’t want to give up everything you own?

You may be reluctant to cast an item aside, even if you don’t use it often and it’s in good condition.  You may wish to keep it in case you want to use it in the future or pass it along to somebody else.  Maybe it’s a toy, an old bike, or some books.  That furniture you don’t need could be stored away when your children buy a home and need a few dressers.

More and more, people want to own fewer possessions.  Some people would rather have fewer things around the house, but if you’d rather not completely get rid of those things then self-storage may be the right choice.  If you are downsizing, but aren’t entirely sure which pieces are staying or are being sold or tossed, a self-storage unit will help while you make a decision.

There are more people in your living space

Whether you have a baby on the way or moving in with new roommates, and need to completely clear a room, you don’t have to put everything up for sale. Put any spare beds along with any furniture that you don’t need into a storage unit.  If your situation changes you can always take them back out and use them or sell them.

Moving between places

We all know how stressful it can be to move, making sure all your furniture can be transported, your breakables in a safe place and making sure nothing gets left behind.  Sometimes, self-storage is a great option when you want to store certain items before your move so that nothing gets lost, and you can figure out what your space is going to be like before you bring everything into it.

Sometimes, people have to move out of the home they are selling before they can move into their new place.  Renting a self-storage unit is ideal in this situation as it gives you a safe, secure place to store your belongings until you can move those items for good.

Abby's Self Storage - pumpkins

Keep seasonal items

All of those Halloween cobwebs and Christmas tree lights and wreaths are taking space up in your home.  You don’t need to keep those decorations around all the time (unless you’re a fan of Christmas in July).  Storing them in a self-storage unit is a good solution for keeping those items out of the way when they aren’t being used.  Take those Halloween decorations and costumes back out when the spooky season starts again.

Why You Should Store Your Furniture in a Self Storage

Sometimes you may need to store away your furniture for a while. You might be moving to a new place, or you may no longer have the space to keep all of it.  Whatever the reason may be, storage facilities are a great option if you don’t want to get rid of those items.  However, there are precautions you should take when storing more delicate pieces of furniture.  It might take some work, but these tips are extremely useful in helping to keep your possessions in working order and looking good when you retrieve them.

  1. First, be sure to make the necessary repairs that need to be made. If any of the furniture is damaged, it is likely to become even more damaged in the process of moving or while stored away.

Abby's Self Storage coffee

  1. Cover your Furniture. Any upholstered or wood furniture you have can be wrapped with plastic wrap or shrink wrap. Wrapping can prevent furniture from rubbing together and help keep insects or animals from burrowing in them.  If you don’t have plastic wrap, use blankets, sheets, old curtains, or anything else you can think of to cover. Lining the floor of the storage room with thick plastic sheets helps protect both your furniture and the floor in case any moisture occurs in the unit.  Another good idea is to place padding on the edges and corners of your furniture to prevent breakage of other fragile items.

Abby's Self Storage chair

  1. It may be a good idea to disassemble any wood furniture you have to prevent damage. Wood expands or contracts according to the climate. Remove the legs on tables and chairs, and the headboards and footboards on bed frames.  Make sure to keep the screws, nuts, bolts, locks and keys in a labeled container with the pieces so that when the time comes to put the furniture back together, you aren’t missing anything.

Abby's Self Storage living

  1. If wood dries out, it’s more susceptible to cracks. To prevent that from happening, use a wood cleaner to protect the finish. You may then treat your wood furniture with furniture polish, which adds moisture, before storing it. If you can, store dresser drawers and desk drawers separately.

Abby's Self Storage table

  1. Before you store you fabric furniture, make sure it is clean by wiping it down or vacuuming it, to be sure there is no dust, mold, or mildew. You can use an antibacterial wipe, one that is safe for fabrics. Make certain your furniture is completely dry before wrapping or putting away.

Abby's Self Storage computer

  1. Store electronics and televisions in their original packaging. If you put away appliances such as these, it is best to protect them as much as possible from dust, so placing them in their packaging should help.

Abby's Self Storage couch

  1. Polish metal furnishings made from metals such as brass, nickel, or silver to prevent oxidation. Use a polishing cloth and a metal cleaner to do this. This will get rid of any current oxidation and help in delaying future tarnish.

Abby's Self Storage cat

  1. If you bunch up your belongings, you run the risk of objects brushing up against each other, which could lead to cracks in wood tables or chairs. Make sure there is plenty of space. Start with the largest items and work from there.  Be sure to create an aisle that makes access through the unit easy.

Improve your Quality of Life with a Self-Storage Unit

Did you know that our quality of life can be improved if we’re just a bit more organized? Studies have shown that our moods can be dramatically improved when we surround ourselves in an organized environment. As a byproduct of our enhanced mood, our productivity also improves. It almost seems like the more organized we are, the more likely our quality of life improves. So if that’s the case, it’s almost a no-brainer to start getting organized! If becoming more organized is something you’re looking for but you simply don’t know where to start we’ve got you covered. Let’s get started.

Abby's Self Storage table

Renting out a storage unit is probably one of the most overlooked first steps towards becoming more organized. Majority of the time, being disorganized occurs when there are too many things all over the place with not enough room. The reason behind this is because our home only has a limited amount of space. It also doesn’t help that each year we buy tons of new toys and gadgets while keeping our old toys as well.

Abby's Self Storage couch

Storage units come in different sizes from 5×5 units to 10×30 units and maybe even bigger. Regardless of how many stuff you have at home, there will always be a storage unit that’ll accommodate your needs. Once you’ve picked out your storage facility, we can begin our journey to a better quality of life.

Abby's Self Storage living room

The trick to a better quality of life is decluttering your home. A little game I like to play when I’m on a decluttering session is to hold 2 separate trash bags. In one of the trash bags, you’ll toss all trash or junk you no longer need. On the other trash bag, put anything and everything you want to be put in your storage unit. So what’s considered trash and what’s considered storage worthy? Let’s face it, if you have stuff that hasn’t been touched or used in the last 12 months there’s a pretty good chance you found your trash. Now I’m not talking about decors and sentimental items. I’m talking about outdated stuff. Let’s say you recently bought a new vacuum and from that day forth, you only use the new vacuum and neglect the old. As the saying goes “out with the old, in with the new.” Make this game a little more interesting by adding another trash bag. For this third trash page, put stuff that could go towards charity or perhaps even a yard sale. Once you’ve finished your game, you’d be rewarded with a clutter-free home with a bit of organization.

7 Reasons Why People Use a Self-Storage Unit

Nowadays it seems like we can’t go anywhere without noticing a self-storage facility. The reason behind this is because self-storage has become increasingly popular over the last decade. With space becoming more and more of an issue for many of us, a storage unit would be the perfect simple solution. But beyond the space issue, there are several other reasons why increasing numbers of people have begun to use self-storage units. Here are some of these reasons.

Abby's Self Storage kitchen

  • Moving to a New Home – With the housing market at all-time highs, we’re seeing an increasing number of people buying/selling homes. In this complex housing market, moving to our new home isn’t always a straightforward process that can be accomplished within a day. Often times, there may be unexpected move-in/move-out delays where the new home isn’t ready for the move-in transition. Fortunately, self-storage units provide a solution for holding your belongings until the move-in process is completed.
  • Home Renovation – Whether you’re looking to reconstruct a leaky roof or add on an additional room, the last thing you’ll want to see is debris and dust on your floors and furniture. During these times when your home is under renovation, a self-storage unit can provide a safe temporary solution to house your valued items and furniture. Once the renovation is completed, you’ll have the opportunity to redecorate your home with your stored belongings.
  • Safe Haven for Seasonal Belongings – A storage unit is a perfect place to store seasonal items such as Christmas lights, Halloween decorations, gardening tools and etc. It’s a great way to declutter and organize your garage. It’s also a great place to store surplus items that take up space in your home. This also holds true for vehicle storage as well such as dune buggies, lawn mowers and the like. Depending on the size of your unit and the facility’s policies, you may even be able to provide extra protection for your belongings such as climate controlled units.

Abby's Self Storage college

  • Gap Year – Many students choose to either come back home to their parent’s house or spend a year traveling before entering the big world of work. In either scenario, many will find that they have nowhere to store their belongings after college. There’s probably no room back at the parent’s home. Who knows what sorts of things the parents might have acquired over the last 3 – 4 years. A possible solution to this temporary dilemma would be a storage unit.

Abby's Self Storage baby

  • Baby on the way – If you’re expecting a new addition on the way, you’ll need to clear up your spare bedroom and replace the spare bed with a crib. You can store your spare bed, furniture along with any additional belongings that aren’t needed at a storage facility.

Abby's Self Storage golf

  • Our Hobbies – We all know that a dedicated hobby can take up a lot of time and space. For example large fishing rods and golf clubs, so let’s remove the clutter from our homes and keep our hobbies away from the family. Whether your hobbies are the outdoors or a collector, a storage unit can help keep your hobbies from clashing with your family space.

Abby's Self Storage car

  • Keep your Vehicle Safe – If your prized vehicle is collecting dust in the garage, keep it safe at a storage facility. Whether your prized vehicle is a car, boat, trailer or motorcycle, you can rest assured that it’ll be safe.

Micro Apartments are on the Rise! And Self Storages are right behind!

Major cities across the nation have begun noticing the rising popularity of micro-apartments. They’re on the rise due to the lack of housing available in the downtown areas of these cities. A typical micro apartment can range anywhere between 200 – 400 square feet, which is considerately small in comparison to the average 500 – 800 square feet apartment. So this sort of begs the question, why would anyone choose to live in such a small living quarter? And what is causing micro apartments to be in huge demand? And how does the rise in micro apartments influence self-storage? Let’s find out.

Abby's Self Storage Micro Apartment

Let’s begin from the top. How can micro apartments become a viable solution to combat the housing crisis in major cities as well as alleviate some of the monthly rental cost? Well for starters, a typical apartment in or near the downtown area of a major city may range anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000 dollars per month. That’s an insane amount of money just to put a roof over your head. According to financial surveys, more than 70% of Americans spent close to half or one-third of their paycheck into their housing cost. The rest of the paycheck goes into necessities such as food but also in technology. With the advancement of technology, it’s enabled us to access our e-books, data, and information via a computer, tablet or phone. In other words, we don’t need the extra square feet for book shelves and other remnants of the past necessities within the living quarters. With the reduced square feet in the living quarters, surely the cost of rent will also be reduced. So as a solution to not only save space and reduce the cost of living, micro-apartments have become viable and sought after solution. Times are definitely changing and millennials are at the forefront of this change and they’re looking to pave a new direction.

Abby's Self Storage Major City

On the psychological side of this micro-apartment movement, we have to understand that people have a really strong desire for wanting a place of their own. It’s a huge signifier that you’ve reached a certain stage in life and it also gives you an opportunity for privacy. Micro-apartments are becoming the next alternative to owning a property of their own. Especially since the average cost of a home is well beyond most typical American’s budget range, let alone a regular sized apartment or loft. Micro-apartments ring true to the phrase, “less is more”.

Abby's Self Storage Apartment

Micro-apartments are typically built in or close to the downtown areas of major cities so everything is in close proximity. Although your living quarters are reduced significantly, it’s made up in other aspects such as shorter distance to and from work, groceries, and if you’re a green environmentalist that’s a huge bonus. Most micro-apartments are also built with a communal layout in mind. In other words, there are designated communal workspaces and lounging areas. These communal areas are usually themed with a coffee setting atmosphere and ambiance to help improve social interaction and ultimately build a community. Think of these communal spaces as your unofficial living room with the added bonus of making new friends.

With the size of micro-apartments ranging only a couple hundred square feet, there are bound to be some major items and belongings we simply can’t store. As a possible solution, self-storage will become their next best friend. It just makes more sense to spend a hundred dollars on a storage unit to store your belongings than to spend a couple extra thousand on a slightly bigger apartment to hold your belongings. With health and fitness becoming increasingly popular among newer generations, it’s to no surprise why walking to and from work is no big deal. That’s just the direction we’re headed, so if you need something from your storage unit, just remember it’ll only be a quick stroll away.

Top 4 Reasons for Using a Self-Storage Unit

According to the Self-Storage Association, there are approximately 50,000 self-storage facilities throughout the United States. There are also several reasons for using a self-storage unit. Here are the top 4 reasons why!

Abby's Self Storage letter

De-Cluttering

We all have feelings, some of course more than others. So when it comes to sentimental items whether it’s an old crumpled note or a giant patched up teddy bear we as people can’t help but feel an emotional attachment. So after a full house cleaning, we tend to find a lot of things that we would likely toss away. However, there might be a few incidences that we find sentimental items that we don’t want to toss away but also would prefer not to have around the house. If this is the case, a self-storage unit can be a great solution. This way, you can have a clean clutter-free home all the while keeping your sentimental valuables. It’s a win-win in my book!

Moving Home

You know that saying “A home isn’t a Home unless you’re there?”, or at least something along the lines of that. Well, this rings true when we’re moving to a new home. Often times when we make a move, we’d like to go by the saying “out with the old and in with the new.” But sometimes that crusty old couch or chipped dining table holds sentimental memories of your family and without them, it just wouldn’t feel the same. That’s where a self-storage unit comes in! A storage unit is perfect for the in-between phase during a move. For example, there may be times where we might have to leave our current home for a particular reason while the new home is not yet in a position for a move in. Many of us during this in between moving phase may live with relatives, friends or in a temporary living space. However, moving all your furniture and bulkier belongings with you may prove to be difficult or near impossible. Which is why a self-storage unit would be a great solution to this sort of predicament.

Hobby Equipment

Hobbies are an intricate part of life for a lot of people. Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument or playing sports, hobbies are an important building block for our identity. That’s precisely why it’s important to have our equipment properly secured and stored when it comes time to indulge ourselves in our craft. Especially if you’ve got gallons of paint lying around the house or snowboards and skis taking up half of the garage. A climate controlled storage unit would be the most ideal unit for storing your most precious equipment.

More Space

Everyone has their specific interests, likes and dislikes. So when you amplify these likes and interests you’re generally left with what society calls “a hoarder.” Whether you’re hoarding as a hobby or for something that peaks your happiness, collecting and surrounding yourself with things that make you happy is a good thing. If collecting decorative socks or bottle caps bring you happiness all the more power to you. Though you may be labeled as a hoarder I think the happiness you receive from your decorative sock collection can easily outweigh the stigma associated with the term “hoarder”. So now you have shelves and shelves of mint-condition socks all around your house and you’re slowly running out of space to shelve them. So do you do now? Well, one solution is a storage unit. Declutter and free up some space around the house to make more room for shelves! Who doesn’t like to have shelves of socks all around their house!? Word of advice, if you’re hoarding collection is around the house I think it may be a sign to store them at a storage facility. Not only will it look more organized and securely kept in the storage unit, but nobody will know that you’re a hoarder!

Or perhaps a new dining table set featuring a detailed hand carved floral design with a rich mahogany finish? Whatever the case may be, you’re now stuck with old furniture. A proper solution to this dilemma would be to store your old furniture in a storage facility. Storing furniture in a storage facility is a completely different animal than storing boxes and trinkets. There are a few additional steps and preparation for furniture storage. Moving furniture isn’t as simple as it may seem. So to help our community, I’ve compiled a few furniture storage tips and tricks. Check them out!

Do you need Climate Controlled Storage?

First and foremost, determine the type of material your furniture is made out of. This’ll help you decided whether or not a climate controlled unit is needed or not. For instance, wood furniture is typically known to chip and crack when temperatures are too dry. One of the best storage methods in ensuring that your furniture remains unscathed during the storage period is investing in a climate controlled unit. A climate controlled unit is a unit that will keep your belongings in a constant environment. Generally speaking, the temperate settings for the climate controlled unit range anywhere from 55 degrees to 85 degrees. Climate controlled units are enclosed units; therefore it’ll resist dust, pests, humidity and other elemental threats. If you live in an area with high weather and temperature volatility, I highly recommend going with a climate controlled storage unit.

Abby's Self Storage dining

How big of a unit would I need to store my furniture?

This question seems a bit obvious, but the size of your unit does matter. In addition to considering a climate controlled storage unit, please also consider if the unit is large enough to comfortably accommodate your furniture. Now, what do I mean by comfortably accommodate your furniture? I’m talking about ventilation. Ventilation is a critical component in preserving your furniture. When storing your furniture, try not to store your furniture pressed against a wall. If possible, elevate your furniture off the floor with pallets to help better facilitate the airflow. This will help keep any potential mold at bay.

Have you prepared Your Furniture for storage?

One of the fundamental storage preparations for storage is to disassemble the furniture as much as possible for easier storage. This’ll allow you to make the most of the space and help better protect it. As tempted as you may be to wrap your furniture in plastic wrap or cover, don’t do it. Doing so will increase the odds of heat and moisture damage by preventing adequate ventilation. There are, however, specialized storage covers you may use to keep your furniture safe. Specifically, when it comes to mattress storage, you should definitely invest in a mattress storage bag to help ward off potential little critters. In the case of leather furniture, the best preparation prior to storage is to coat the leather with a protective wax or polish to help reduce the effects of temperature change and moisture. When it comes to wood furniture, you’ll look at a more extensive care preparation because wood is susceptible to splitting and cracking due to dryness. One of the best methods to prep wood furniture prior to storage is coating it with a protective wooden wax or polish. Don’t be afraid to be generous with the polish, it’s better to use too much than too little.

Create an In-House Office by decluttering your Guest Room with the help of a Storage Facility

Let’s be honest, we all have that one guest room in our home that we’ve converted into a “storage unit” over the years. You know, the one where you store toilet paper rolls, cleaning supplies, fold up tables/chairs and even Amazon cardboard boxes. Don’t you think it’s about time to put that room to good use, perhaps an in-house office? Did you know that having a dedicated home office space is becoming the new must-have room in most households? According to Global Workplace Analytics, there has been a 103% increase in people working from home since 2005 and that’s among the non-self-employed. So if you’re among the percentage of people who are working from home part-time or even full-time, you may want to know more about how to turn that guest room into a home office. Let’s get started!

time-2980690_960_720

  1. This may seem like a no-brainer but the number one issue to deal with when working from home is distractions. Whether it’s the pets, the TV or even household chores – there’s probably going to be something occupying your mind besides work. To help with distractions, it’s best to set up your office away from any TVs. If possible, finish your household chores the day or night before. The key is to make it a habit and to treat your in-house office like you would at work. Strictly professional with the utmost discipline. With that said, it’s also important to keep the same routine you would do if you were going to work. To just name a few, I’m talking about getting up early in the morning and actually dressing up like you would if you were to go to work. In other words, that means you must resist the temptation of rolling out of bed and working in your PJs. It’s important to treat your in-house office with respect to work, otherwise, distractions and procrastination will follow.

computer-564099_960_720

  1. Believe it or not, the key to staying alert and staying productive is good lighting. Whether you prefer natural lighting or artificial lighting, find out which works best for you. If you’re looking to set up your office near a window, chances are you’re looking to illuminate your room with natural lighting. If so, keep in mind that the sunlight’s point of entry through the window is largely dependent on the time of day. For instance, when it hits noontime, the sunlight may penetrate through your window and reflect off your laptop to create an unsightly glare. This may or may not be distracting. There’s also the off-chance the sun might decide to call in sick from work. If that’s the case, try a desk lamp that closely resembles sunlight. Now if you prefer a more controlled setting then artificial lighting would be the most ideal choice for you. However, you may see an ever-so-slightly increase in your electricity bill, to say the least. This controlled lighting option gives you the freedom to position your light source to even the color displayed. This may take some trial and error to determine which type of lighting works best for you. Needless to say that having the right type of lighting is going to be essential to staying alert and staying productive.

office-581127_960_720

  1. This may also seem like a no-brainer but trust me when I say this, this happens far too often than not – loss of internet connection. Nothing is more frustrating than encountering a bad internet connection in the middle of your work. It can either slap your motivation across the face or slam the brakes on your work momentum and spiral you down the road of frustration. Both of which will completely destroy your productivity in no time. So, if your work requires an internet connection, I think it would be best to invest in proper internet equipment. Cough up a few extra dollars and save yourself from a world of headaches.

3 Long-Term Storage Tips You Should Consider Before Living Abroad in Another Country

Before we dive right in, it’s important to ask yourself how much stuff you need to store and how long you plan on living abroad. If hypothetically speaking, you plan to book the earliest flight to London with the intention of staying abroad for more than a year. I would highly recommend that you move out of your apartment or the place you’re currently staying at to avoid unnecessary monthly payments. Let’s be honest, we all love money (some more than others) so why not save a few hundred dollars from rent. Savvy? So let’s say you decided to take our recommendation. Yay money! Great! But then it hits you, where are you going to store all your belongings now that you don’t have a place to store them. Fortunately, that’s where a storage facility comes in! Storage facilities typically offer a wide range of storage sizes so you’ll have no problem storing all your belongings. Whether you only have a little bit of stuff or whether you have a closet full of stuff, a storage facility will accommodate your every need. A storage facility is a perfect solution for storing your belongings at an affordable price while keeping your stuff safely secured. Most storage facilities pride themselves on their security so you can bet that they’ll have state-of-the-art security features to help ensure you’ll have a peace of mind when traveling. But before you jump onto this idea, check out these 3 long-term storage tips first!

Abby's Self Storage ticket

1. As obvious as this tip may be, you’d be surprised how often this tip gets overlooked. Properly storing and packing. Now, this goes without say. Please make sure that when you’re packaging your boxes or containers to be mindful of your items. Now, what do I mean by this? Don’t toss stuff or randomly stack your items in a box, especially if you’re planning to store your belongings for the long-term. Be mindful of stacking the harder and sturdier items on the bottom of the box and work your way from heavy to light. This is a great way to ensure that your boxes or containers won’t deform and collapse onto one another. You definitely wouldn’t want your heavier boxes smooshing your lighter boxes underneath now, would you?

2. Decide whether or not a climate controlled storage unit is beneficial for you. How would you determine this, you might ask? This is the part where you would sit down in front of your stuff and laser-beam focus on the items that could potentially be damaged if left alone. When I said potentially “damaged”, I’m talking about the items in your possession that are climate sensitive such as wood furniture, electronics, musical instruments and so forth. These climate controlled units, however, are a little more pricey and expensive than the standard storage unit. But the increased cost is well worth it in protecting your belongings in the long run. To a degree, this may even help provide a better peace of mind knowing that your items aren’t subjected to temperature changes.

3. To invest in storage insurance or to not invest in storage insurance? Hmm, that’s a good question to ask oneself, especially if you’re going abroad for a number of years. I strongly suggest looking into storage insurance for precautionary measures. It doesn’t really hurt to add another layer of security to further increase your peace of mind. And in the event of a natural disaster occurring within the facility, you can rest assured knowing that your items are insured. Like the old saying goes, “it’s better safe than sorry.”

New Year’s Resolution: Organize Your Storage with our New Year’s Organization Tips

It’s that time of year once again, where friends and loved ones are gathered around counting down the seconds to start their New Year!

Abby's Self Storage kitchen

You know what they say! Every New Year comes with new resolutions and what better way than to start a new year than to be organized! But before we get started, it’s also imperative to start the new years with honesty. So, let’s be honest for a second. Most people, myself included, do a pretty lousy job of sticking to our new year’s resolutions. But that’s not going to stop me or many others from trying! Being more organized overall can help you achieve the most popular resolutions of losing weight, staying fit and enjoying life to the fullest! So for starters, let’s begin with organizing our self-storage units! Here are some self-storage organization tips you can do right off the bat!

Abby's Self Storage living

Like many of us, we’ve either collected or acquired quite a few things over the past year and that’s completely understandable and relatable. Some stuff may be sentimental, useful, not useful or just plain junk, but to us, they’re all essential. Now as cliché as this may sound, we must control our beautiful junk rather than letting it control us.

Abby's Self Storage room

When life happens, usually messes happen as well. This is typically the case because there just isn’t ever enough time to get everything organized. Well, you’re in luck! A storage unit can help you by providing a place for all your beautiful junk. One of the main issues when it comes to organization is having too much stuff lying around with too little space. So say bye-bye to your junk piles that you have to throw your body against in order to close. It’s about that time to send all that stuff that you’re “probably going to use again” into a storage unit where it can at least stay out of your way. So how do you decide which stuff gets stored in a storage unit? Here are some suggestions.

Abby's Self Storage chair

Go through each and every room in your home. Stop in any of the rooms and ask yourself what items are in this room that’s taking up space. There’s absolutely no reason for random stuff to be taking up valuable space in your home. Now, what exactly do I mean when I say “value”? What I mean by value is whether or not the item provides any usefulness. For example, if a toy elephant is placed on top of a drawer for decoration purposes or it holds sentimental value. Then by all means that toy elephant is valuable to your household. What would deem invaluable would be a stuffed animal that you placed on top of a drawer because you haven’t figured out where to put it. Items like these whether their toys, paintings, tools or etc. are perfect examples that are taking up valuable space in your home that offer no value. Now that you figured out what and what not to keep in your household, how does that help you become more organized?

Don’t ruin the Surprise! Store your Christmas Gifts in a Self Storage!

Season’s greetings everyone! It’s that special time of year again; where cheer and joy surround us and excitement fill the air!

Christmas is the time of happiness but also can be a time of stressfulness especially when it comes to completing your Christmas shopping list. Am I right? We know the struggle of buying the presents we need. From toddler toys to more elaborate gifts for friends and family. Although the struggle of finishing your Christmas shopping list may seem difficult at the time it’s actually nothing compared to when you have to hide your gifts until Christmas Eve. Packing and wrapping the gifts may pose another new set challenge to some but that could be managed when the kids or extended family members aren’t there. The real problem comes after the presents have been wrapped. It’s definitely not easy storing or hiding a big glimmering shining present from the eyes of a child. We can all agree that children are very adventurous and they’ll find some way to stumble upon things we never thought would happen. Which is why I propose we hide our Christmas presents in a self-storage facility?

Abby's Self Storage warp

Depending on the presents you bought, you might want to double check if a climate controlled unit would work best to store your presents. Now, I understand that this may seem like a lot of effort just to maintain the excitement. However, kids actually anticipate Christmas not because of what they know they will receive but because they know that they’ll be surprised. I also like to think that most parents are concerned about storing gifts before the holidays. Say for example, sometime in August or September you stumble upon a sales event and in that event, there was something that caught your eye that would make an excellent gift. Now if I knew any better, chances are you’re most likely going to buy it and store it and use it when the time is right. This occurrence is what I’d like to call fate shopping or simply seizing the opportunity. Instances like these where we buy gifts far in advance have many perks and benefits. One benefit is that we have 1 less gift to worry about when it comes down to complete our Christmas shopping list. The second benefit is avoiding the long lines and last-minute shoppers at the checkouts. As for the perks, there are just too many to name so I’m going to share with you my favorite perk. Discount Sales. That’s right, discount sales. I’m talking about online shopping discounts as well as in-store discounts.

Abby's Self Storage ornament

Now I can’t say this about everyone but I know that majority of us wouldn’t mind saving a few dollars here and there. Agree? I’ll take that as a yes. With that said, I for one love the idea of saving a few dollars while checking off my Christmas shopping list at the same time. Now I say this only because we can all relate just how expensive gifts can be. Before you say anything, I know that some of you may say that we don’t have to spend a lot of money on gifts. This, in my opinion, is absolutely true! I can even go as far and say the cliché saying “it’s the thought that counts.” Now although this may ring true to some, I think a carefully thought up gift that’s inexpensive as well as practical and useful can go a long way.

Abby's Self Storage candles

Christmas shopping can be a stressful task but it doesn’t have to be! Careful planning can help minimize the burden of completing your shopping list. Once you complete your early bird Christmas shopping and have them all neatly wrapped up, it’s time to store them! What better place than to store them than your Self-Storage Facility? Store your gifts and presents in your storage unit until the December rolls around or in most cases until the Christmas tree is in the house.  Christmas is an exciting and wonderful holiday. A few thoughtful planning for this annual event is nothing compared to the wonders and joy it brings to those around you.

With that said, understand that a self-storage is a great way to save and preserve your belongings. People typically use self-storages for a variety of reasons such as clearing up space in their home or apartment. While others may view a self-storage as a temporary solution for their moving transitions. Regardless of what your case may be, we can all agree that keeping your belongings safe is one of the most important factors when deciding which storage facility to sign up for. With that said, let’s check out the 5 simple starter tips for beginner self-storage renters.

Abby's Self Storage camera

1) Find a self-storage facility with several security features – such as 24/7 video surveillance, electronic pin access gates, alarm systems, well-lit facility and more. These are some security related features you should definitely look for at any facility. Another tip to keep your eyes open for is how tidy the facility is, both inside and outside. The more well-kept a facility is generally translates to how regulated the overall facility is maintained. This is typically a good sign. Another great sign of a secured facility is if they have an on-site employee 24/7 as it’ll help bring in a physical presence to help deter potential shenanigans.

2) Find out if the self-storage facility offers insurance – whenever a facility offers insurance, that’s always a good sign. It shows that the facility is confident in securing your belongings. Additionally, having insurance on your belongings is always good to have in case a security breach occurs or your belongings are damaged. It’s highly recommended to ensure your belongings if you plan on storing your items for a long period of time.

3) Find out whether your belongings are sensitive to the environment – in other words, if you’re renting an outdoor storage, it’s important to make sure that your unit is completely sealed and secured to prevent any damages from the environment such as the weather. Depending on the items you plan on storing, a climate controlled storage unit is typically the best option. Without proper environmental protection, you belongings may be in danger of damages from such elements as floods, fires and rust.

4) Find yourself a secure lock – one of the most important security measures you can do is to take matters into your own hands. While a lock may seem like the most obvious signs of security, people tend to not take into consideration the lock quality. Keep in mind that some facilities may require you to bring your own security lock for your own protection while other facilities have their own security measures to ensure your belongings are safe.

Abby's Self Storage notes

5) Find yourself a notebook or something to record your items – it’s important to keep a map record of where your belongings are located. This’ll ensure that no one has been in your unit and that it was exactly as you had left it. Additionally, having a record of your belongings is great because it’ll help you stay organized come time to move. Another important reason why you should keep a record of your belongings is in case of an insurance claim.

Find out what you can do with a Self-Storage Unit for your Self-Made Business!

Have you thought about running your own business and becoming a business man or business woman?  Or perhaps you’ve already started your business and you’re using your living room or garage as your office space and product storage. With that said if you begin to notice paperwork spread out all over your living room and your business products taking up the entire garage space, then it may be time to invest in a more professional space. However, we understand that “professional space” is expensive and requires a lot of paperwork before you get the approval. This is why we propose that before you make that big investment renting out an office space or warehouse that you look into a self-storage facility. Rather than investing hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month on an office space, you could invest a hundred dollars or less on a storage unit. The storage unit approach will be highly cost effective, meaning it’ll be an affordable alternative to store your business products or equipment and clear up space in your home. This will not only be a step forward in your business but also a step to tidying up your home. Here are just a few examples of what you can potentially do with your Self-Storage Unit.

1) Online Product Business – One of the most sought after self-proclaimed businesses are the online product business which entails scalping or flipping products from major sites such as eBay and Amazon. If you are someone with a hunger to make a few bucks then this business idea is for you. Generally what you would do is find products on auction sites such as eBay or sites such as Amazon that are selling specific products at a cheap price and then reselling them to make a profit. Typically, this process of scalping takes a lot of time. When you find a good product for a cheap price, you generally would buy it and store it until you find either the right buyer or wait until demand increases. In order to find the right seller and right buyer, time must be spent storing and keeping the product in good condition. In other words, this is the time when countless living rooms and garages are sacrificed for a means of storage space. Fortunately, we have a solution! A self-storage unit can help you store multiple items until they are ready to be sold.

2) Business Equipment/Inventory Storage – For many small locally owned businesses, there are a lot of inventory and equipment that are highly important to a business but lack the space to store. Some examples include local restaurants that just don’t have the space store extra chairs, tables or even cleaning supplies in the event that a chair or table breaks. Having extra chairs in case of an emergency breakdown is a perfect example of a well-prepared business that’s ready to withstand unforeseen trouble. Rather than spending a time and effort to reorder a new chair, you can have it stored in a self-storage until it’s time to use. Depending on the type of business, there’s always something that needs to be temporarily stored.

3) Film or Video Producer – Aspiring to become the next big movie producer? Or looking to produce short films to upload onto Youtube to rack in Ad revenue? If you’ve answered yes to either question then this may help you! A storage unit is built in a way where it has the potential to turn into a makeshift video studio. Most storage units have a large enough space to shoot videos. Interesting enough you can also change the layout of the storage unit as many times as you like to ensure you get the best angles! Customize the interior of your storage unit for a more dynamic video feel. With that all said and done, another reason why a self-storage unit is great for aspiring video producers is that the equipment is typically huge in size and quantity. As a video producer is only nature to have multiple cameras with multiple lenses on hand. Aside from cameras, video producers have large equipment such as extended microphones, huge lighting lamps, light reflectors and many more. Now keep in mind, the equipment are fairly large and can take up a lot of space. Rather than taking up your entire living room or garage with your equipment, you can store them in a climate controlled storage unit.

1. Choose One Specific Box Size (if possible) – Having same sized boxes will definitely help make your planning process a whole lot easier. You’ll have a clearer estimation of where the boxes should go and how many boxes should be allocated to one side of the self-storage unit or the other. Additionally if you’re into detailed planning, you may go as far as measure the width, height and dimensions of the box for an even clearer plan of action. To make matters even easier and more flexible when you’re stacking, you may look into boxes that are interchangeable. For instance, using two small boxes that equal the size of one large size box. This is helpful and beneficial for you because you may want to store specific items in a box that you wouldn’t normally store in another.

2. Identify & Prioritize The Items You May Need – Let’s be honest here, there are certain items that you use regularly and items that you do not use regularly. The trick is to store the items you do not use regularly on the lower boxes. The idea of this tip is to have your most regularly used items on top of the storage for easier accessibility. One note to mention is to give extra thought to seasonal items such as Christmas lights, Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving decorations and etc. You may also consider separating the self-storage unit in half with one side having seasonal and frequently used items such as tents, sleeping bags, sleds and etc.

3. Label Each Box You Pack – This is where true organization comes into play. Labeling each box on the top and the sides of the box will help keep you sane when it comes time to dig through your belongings. There are several methods of organization when it comes to labeling your boxes. You can color code each box with a specific color to represent a specific group of items or use numbers to distinguish the boxes from one another. Perhaps even a combination of both color and number.

Abby's Self Storage pen

4. Create The Master List – Some people may refer to the master list as the holy bible of their self-storage unit. The reference is by all means nothing short of excellence. So once you are completed with your desired method of labeling, a master list should be created. This master list will be your ticket to maintaining your sanity. The master list will come in handy when you need to locate a specific item, especially if some of your boxes are completely out of view. With technology becoming more advanced by the second, you can save yourself the trouble of hand-writing the entire list of the self-storage unit. Instead you can opt to using Microsoft Word or another digital recording application to write down your specifics. With all that said and done, if you’re a detailed planner and you want to be extra. We recommend writing down the corresponding box color/number with a list of the items that the box contains as well as the location of the box in the self-storage unit. This is of course, one hundred percent optional.

Abby's Self Storage map

5. Place A Map Of Your Belongings Inside The Self-Storage Unit – Drum roll please! The last step to an organized self-storage unit is a map. That’s right! A Map! A simple friendly reminder of the interior layout of your self-storage unit is the final tip in becoming a pro. Typically, the average person that visits their self-storage unit ranges between a few weeks to a few months depending what is stored in the facilities. We sometimes tend to be forgetful at times and as a safety measure, a map can help alleviate time spend digging through your belongings.

Keep Healthy While You’re Moving Homes

Moving can be hard work so you want to make sure to stock up on healthy snacks and stay hydrated. Especially during the summer when the heat can get to unbearable temperatures, you want to make sure that when you’re doing heavy lifting that you keep your body cool and nourished. Whether you are moving in and out of your self storage unit, or moving in and out of a truck, these tips will help keep you strong through the job.

drinking_water1. Keep water accessible to hydrate  If you are moving into or out of your self storage unit, make sure to have water bottles in a cooler in the car. Don’t forget to drink your water often between trips of moving your items from the car or to the car, especially on a hot summer’s day. If you are moving items between your new home from your old home, make sure to have water bottles at both your new home and old home so they are accessible. This is one of the most forgotten items when arriving at the new home: handy water bottles for when you are unpacking your truck for the first time. Having a case handy will keep you and your family hydrated when unpacking the truck.

2. Drink sports drinks with electrolytes, avoid sodas! In the times when you are doing extraneous heavy lifting, whether it is moving large appliances in and out of your self storage unit or into and out of your moving truck, you want to have your sports drinks handy to replenish after breaking out in sweat. The electrolytes found in sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade can help the body endure heavy lifting and long hours of moving items in and out of your home or self storage unit. Avoid Sodas at all costs during moving because soda dehydrates the body and it will give you a sugar crash. Stick to water and the sports drinks during heavy moving days.

almonds-healthy_snacks3. Re-energize with healthy snacksMoving is extremely stressful and sometimes we forget to eat during stressful times. It’s important to energize your body during a move, especially when lifting heavy boxes or moving large appliances. Take constant breaks to reenergize with healthy snacks, such as nuts and energy bars. Readily accessible pre-packaged healthy snacks such as nut packages and energy bars are perfect for quick snacking, especially when you are on the go such as driving in the moving truck.

4. Healthy meals on-the-go to keep your energy flowing —Don’t forget to eat your meals! Snacking is great to hold you over but it’s essential to eat healthy meals to keep your body in top-performance shape for all the packing and lifting that moving requires. Avoid fast-food restaurants that have little-nutrition meals and instead opt for pre-packaged salads with chicken in them or sandwiches from the local deli. Whole foods such as whole grains and white-meats will help keep you nourished and won’t give you the carbohydrate crashes that fast foods give. You can always purchase sandwiches from a deli the day before or on the morning of the move and keep the sandwiches in a cooler when moving. That way, you can eat during a break when unpacking your items into a self storage unit or your new home.

carrot-juice-fresh-juice5. Fresh juices for added nourishment to keep you movingJuices are a healthy option to gain nutrients and keep your blood sugar up when having a long day moving. Fresh juices have the vitamins and fiber to keep you going throughout the day. Moving days are long and hard and you want to make sure you are staying fit and healthy throughout it, or else your body will be overworked and you run the risk of getting sick. Fresh orange juice will keep your immune system strong. Local juice shops can provide you with all the fresh juices you need on moving day.

Moving is stressful and self storage can help! Whether it is for long-term storage or short-term storage, Abby’s Self Storage can help you find the right storage space for your needs. If you are moving from a larger home to a smaller home or apartment, you can use self storage spaces to house items that you cannot take with you such as furniture, extra beds, cabinets, or other household items. If you are between moving from one home to another and need to place your items into self storage during the in-between time, self storage is perfect for storing your items in such circumstances. Here at Abby’s Self Storage we offer an array of self storage units in Templeton for great prices. Rent a 10×10 self storage unit for $119 a month and store all your items during a move. PACKING & MOVING HOMES WITH KIDS

Moving is stressful and exhausting. Add kids to mix and the level of tension and fatigue is multiplied. If the daunting take of juggling between packing chores and parenting responsibilities a must this summer while school is out, follow these tips to help keep summer vacation fun and the move entertaining for those little ones full of curiosity and energy.

Learning Through Packing packing-toys-for-children

Kids are hands-on learners. Moving offers a teaching opportunity for kids of any age. Keeping kids actively involved in the moving process not only teaches them skills they will use later on as adults, but will also keep them occupied as they help the family in moving.

Smaller Moving Boxes for Smaller Movers

Show your child how to properly pack using smaller boxes based on the size of their belongings. This encourages them to be active participants as they pack their own boxes with their favorite toys and carry them to the moving truck. Smaller boxes can include old shoe boxes which your child can easily place their action figures or Barbie’s into. If the small boxes can be made as light as possible, you can also have your child carry their own boxes from their rooms to the moving truck or garage. This experience teaches your child to have responsibility for their toys and makes them feel part of the moving team!

The Game of Moving

Who hasn’t played (or at least heard about) the game TETRIS? The goal of the game is to fit different sized pieces together without leaving gaps and without allowing the area to overflow. Add a timer to it and the challenge has been heightened! Moving is a lot like TETRIS. Have your child figure out how to make all their toys fit in a small box. This will encourage him/her to organize all those toys better. For older kids, have them time themselves to see how fast they can finish packing up their toy room! Encourage them to maximize the space of the box by utilizing their TETRIS skills. Congratulate them when they show you that they are applying their game skills and reward them for jobs well-done with treats during breaks. Using games to engage your children during the relocation process makes the task of packing more enjoyable for kids and very helpful for you.

Creating Art on Moving Boxes with Children

After your child is done packing a small box with their toys or clothes have them note what is in the box by writing or drawing at the sides of the boxes. This teaches them to organize and help find that specific toy there are sure to need as soon as you go to your new home. Creating art on the boxes is a fun experience that will keep them both productive and occupied. When it comes time to unpacking the boxes in your new home, have your kids help by having them seek out the boxes based on their own labeling. Ask them to find a specific toy to show them how their organizing and labeling helped you out!

KEEPING NERVES AT BAY FOR KIDS DURING RELOCATIONS reading-kids-new-home-moves

Moving is hard on kids not only because their caregivers are preoccupied with packing, but also because they are nervous about the change. Make them feel comfortable by keeping their favorite toys and activities accessible to them throughout the relocation. A backpack for them to keep around them is a convenient way of not losing track of these items and an easy place for your child to store their items.

Keep Them Reading!

Marvel comic books, bed-time fairytales, or the latest magical series, keep kids occupied with learning. Before the hectic packing and moving period starts, make a visit to the book store or library and have them pick out books specifically for that week. While their minds escape to the far and wide adventures, you can focus on the moving chaos.

Coloring & Activity Books

Keep your child’s creative juices flowing! Coloring & activity books will keep their minds engaged and is a stress-reliever for them. Have them get a head start on the summer homework or make birthday cards for any upcoming celebrations. The best part of having coloring and activity books for them is they are easy to carry and don’t take up much space. Your child can work on them in the car or even at the self-storage unit while you’re busy working in your unit.

Electronics & Learning Apps

With the ever-changing options on electronic devices these days, learning apps that entertain your children while teaching them math, reading or creative thinking, are life-savers during home moving! Managing screen time when you’re busy is difficult, setting up screen time parental controls on iPhones and tablets will help control what they are doing and for how long they are on the device. Don’t forget to fully-charge the devices in case you need it at the self-storage unit or on the long drive to your new home.

Pack for a 3-Day Vacation

Moving to a new home is certainly not anything like a vacation. But, when it comes to the first few nights in your new residence, packing for a three-day trip will make those transition days much easier. Packing, loading, unloading and unpacking rarely come without any hiccups: misplaced phone, forget to empty out the fridge or don’t know who has the new apartment keys. When 9 PM hits, the last thing you want to worry about is where the tooth brushes and favorite blankets are. Have each person’s essentials packed up in their individual luggage and alleviate the night and morning frustrations of a “just-moved in” unorganized home.

Sleeping Bags

Sleeping bags are a crucial must when moving, especially when you have disassembled and packed away the bed. You may not be able to re-assemble the bed frames in the new bedrooms. Keep this in mind and anticipate that there may be a possibility of sleeping on the floors on the first night. Having the sleeping bags and pillows accessible will allow for a quick setup for the night.

Bedtime Stories night-light-new-home-bedroom

If reading bedtime stories is a nightly routine on a normal (non-moving) day, stick to the routine and provide comfort through stability. Have the kids choose a few books to pack in their luggage so you can read during bedtime as you help them fall asleep. For older children, ask them about their week and talk to them about how the move went. Spending some time with them will help them feel at ease as they try to wrap their minds around the big move.

Teddy Bear & Night Lights

Moving can be scary for younger children. The unfamiliarity of the new home can be frightening especially during the dark night hours. Pack your child’s comfort toys in the luggage along with some night lights throughout the new place. This will also minimize bumps in to moving boxes as you try to get to the restroom in the unfamiliar home in the middle of the night.

Take a Break & Explore your new Neighborhood with the Family!new-neighborhood-moving-tips

Soon after your family is moved in, the focus is on unpacking and settling your things into the new spaces. But, it’s also important to settle into your neighborhood. Take a break from the packing for an hour or two and explore the neighborhood. Take a family stroll to the nearby parks or the local store. You and your kids will enjoy the break together as you meet your new neighbors and get familiar with your surroundings. After all, the task of moving may not be fun but a new beginning in a new neighborhood is exciting!

Tips To Get You Moving Into Your Storage Space!

Making sure your items are organized yet protected requires a mixture of creativity and detail: stacking boxes to keep fragile items on top; keeping things you may need sooner than later in the front; figuring out how to maximize your unit space with large appliances. Packing and moving is stressful enough without having to think about how best to secure your stuff and plan your storage unit move-in!

7 Quick Tips To Keep In Mind When Packing For Your Move To Abby’s Self Storage

1. Boxes are better at living in Storage Units than plastic bags.

Sturdy & stack well, taking up less space, boxes are just better at keeping those photos from curling at the edges. Plus, sealed plastic bags can trap humidity. Damaging mildew is the last thing you want to worry about when returning to your belongings.

2. Baking Soda makes Appliances feel good.

3. Tag ‘em, Mark ‘em, Label ‘em. Boxes Need Names!

A sharpie pen will be your favorite gizmo during your home or business move. Remember to label them with helpful content references on every side of the box. Locating that can’t-do-without fairy cap will be so much faster. Plus when it’s time for your moving crew to work those heavy boxes into your new place, they can help you out by placing them in the appropriate room.

4. Bubble Wrap saves things from cracking up.

Carefully swaddle fragile dinnerware, wine glasses, holiday ornaments, picture frames with bubble wrap individually to ensure protection. Next, pack them tightly into strong reinforced boxes such as plastic bins. Fill the gaps with scrunched paper, left over bubble wrap, air pillows or Styrofoam peanuts. You can even recycle old newspapers and old clothes as filler to add cushion support for your delicate artifacts.

5. Books are meant to be flat

Those precious pages to distant adventures have delicate spines. Once the binding is damaged, the pages unravel swiftly. Older, antique books especially need extra care during packing. Lay your favorite books flat in moving boxes to prevent page bending and wear on book spines.

6. Make it an easy walk down the Aisle

7. Metal & Oil can work together Tips on Storing Appliances in Storage Units

To stop rusting, grease your metal items like toaster ovens by wiping the metal areas with a bit of oil. This will keep them still usable when you’re ready to shift them out of storage.

Easy Ways To Move Homes Or De-Clutter

How To Get Clutter Moved Out Of Your Home

Spring cleaning or summer moving, the task of de-cluttering or packing is dreadful (yet worthwhile) when done right. Planning, timing and organizing helps stay focused.

Plan Your Move

Sometimes just starting the process is challenging. Where to begin cleaning? Which closet should I start organizing? Which items can I start packing before my official moving date? These questions can be overwhelming and easily result in procrastination. What should you do? The answer is simple: start small!

Small Spaces Are Easier To Clean

Set Aside Time Just For Packing

Often times, even with the best of intentions, multitasking ends up being less productive. With daily demands of family, home and work, we are already stretched for time. Adding a home move to that juggle can amount to high levels of anxiety. Additionally, studies have shown that multitasking can cause us to get more tired which is counterproductive to your plan of staying focused and motivated to get through that long packing list. Read more about why Neuroscientists Say Multitasking Literally Drains The Energy Reserves Of Your Brain.

Multitasking Drains Productivity

Organize Your Space

The whole idea of spring cleaning is to freshen up your space by de-cluttering and well…cleaning! Which means: actually clean out your space by removing unnecessary items. Simply shifting items from one place to another without deciding on its need in your home is another form of procrastination. For instance, if you’re packing for a move, think how much time and energy you will save by getting rid of these extra items before you move into your new home. The laborious task of packing and moving items from your old to new place is undoubtedly tiring mentally and physically. By not adding unwanted extras to your boxes will, at the least, save you some time even when it’s time to unpack.

Moving homes or cleaning is not fun (not for most right?). But, managing it by planning, scheduling uninterrupted time and organizing will get you through it. Most importantly, remember that it will get done!

EXTRA, EXTRA! STORAGE UNITS OFFER SPACIOUS OPTIONS WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE ROOM AT HOME

event vendor storage locations

Let’s face it, we all wish we had extra room. To have less clutter at home, to store extra furniture, or to be more efficient by organizing business equipment to make your living space, well, more livable! Until you renovate, get a bigger home or move into an office space, there is a more affordable option to get that extra storage room without having to relocate!

Medium-Sized Storage Unit to Store Content of a One-Bedroom Apartment

organize clutter in storageDid you know that a 10′ x 13′ can fit the entire contents of a typical one-bedroom apartment? And yes, that includes major appliances such as a washer, dryer, refrigerator and furniture like a mattress and a couch! Depending on the size of your furniture and your packing skills, you may
also fit in an heirloom piece like a grandfather clock or couple of antique chests and cabinets.

A generously-sized space, a 10×13 unit is ideal for storing needs in-between moves that will require renting a space for a month or longer. It is also a convenient solution for businesses that have out grown their current storage capacity or are home-based requiring a more efficient way to organize and access their business equipment.

Affordable Storage Solutions for Businesses

Considered a medium-sized option in most facilities, a 10×13 self-storage unit offers a quick and easily accessible option for businesses to store extra supplies, boxes of paperwork, or bulky equipment. From home-based event planners to contractors who service a wide service area, vendors enjoy the convenience of having a centrally located space that is manageable in terms of organizing and rental rates.

Space for Event & Party Supplieswedding supplies storage

Event vendors have to keep up with the latest fads. Which means their list of supplies is always growing. Inflatable fun like bounce houses, Chiavari Chairs, large circular banquet tables, or centerpiece vases with elaborate fillers to decorate a large venue take up a lot of space but are also the key pieces of a party planners business. A good sized storage unit can be used to categorize and better manage the collection of themed decorations. Expensive and fragile items like the versatile glass vases that are used for so many different events can be securely stored without the risk of damage that often worries the budget-conscious planner working with highly sensitive brides. Additionally, a storage facility near their most frequented venues can cut down a lot of time, energy and stress when things don’t go as planned and a quick backup is needed.

vending machine equipment in storageVending Machine Equipment Storage

Local suppliers such as vending machine equipment providers deal with large, heavy equipment. Unsold machines and extra servicing parts can be stored in a 10 by 13 unit and moved easier into trucks for delivery from storage facilities that have drive-up access. There is also the added benefit of peace of mind when choosing a storage facility that is equipped with additional security options like 24/7 video surveillance or individual unit alarms and alerts so that your  expensive machines are not easy vandalism targets.

Business File Storage

storage small boxes shelves
Every business has years of records and paperwork that needs to be stored. Even with the expanding need to go paperless, many businesses know how crucial having hard copies of important agreements can be in potential legal proceedings or if their company computers are hacked or infected with a virus. While the need to access these documents is unlikely, if the need does arise, being able to dig up a file in 7 years of storage boxes can become a costly and time consuming task. Storage units are a simple way to place these boxes sorted by year. Businesses can use the space to create a system of discarding older files as they replace them with more recent year documents.

Photographers and Videographers

props studio storage spaceBackdrops, photo booths, set furniture, studio props, lighting equipment and camera stands are all part of the creative workings of a photographer or videographer. For professionals who spend so much time on the road between events or shoots, being able to quickly provide a large selection of options to their clients means a better chance of securing a contract.

Storing Surplus Inventory

Keeping up with demands with on-hand inventory can be daunting, especially with unpredictable customer preferences. Storing additional inventory by stocking up gives owners and managers the leeway to purchase supplies in the off-season (often times at lower prices!) in preparation for their peak season demands.
